Waves crashed over his head. He tried to tread water. Tried to stabilize himself. Tried to breathe, but it was useless. The water level rose quickly. Soon he was completely submerged. He attempted to swim toward the surface, but something was holding him down. Saltwater burned his nose as he convulsively inhaled. He felt a claw fasten around his ankle. His heart raced. His mind went blank with panic. His body began to sink deeper as he felt the claws moving up his leg.
Norton sat up on the edge of the bed, rubbed his eyes and lit a cigarette He ran a hand through his thick, black hair feeling for the scar. He needed to make sure that it was real, needed proof that it wasn’t just another nightmare. Ten minutes had passed this time, before he had been forced awake. Six months ago, this would have meant nothing. Now it was an accomplishment. Taking a moment to brace himself, Norton stood and took a deep breath. Involuntarily, his mind began to replay the nightmares. His muscles tens
